Can you tell us a bit about your early life and what drew you to theater and lighting design?

Jessica Greenberg: As a young person, I got involved in theater initially by acting and directing. In college, I took a lighting design class and discovered a passion for it. I loved how lighting could create compositions, enhance scenic and costume design, and support the actors' emotions on stage. That first experience made me want to learn more, and I pursued every opportunity to deepen my knowledge in lighting.

What were some of the challenges you faced establishing yourself in this field?

Jessica Greenberg: The beginning was tough. After college, I had no major connections and was not established. I sent out countless resumes and faced many rejections. However, my determination paid off when I finally got my first small job, which led to more opportunities. I focused on building a good reputation by doing my best in every job and being a good collaborator and communicator.

Can you share some of your most impactful projects?

Jessica Greenberg: One of my unique projects was an interactive sculpture combining reclaimed wood and music, where I used light and motion sensors to create an engaging experience. Another memorable project was a play at Yale University called "In the Next Room," where the scenic and lighting design worked harmoniously to create a magical moments on stage. Additionally, my work with Ogden Contemporary Arts in Utah, using architectural projection mapping to revitalize parts of the city, was very special. These projects not only showcased my lighting design skills but also contributed to community engagement and artistic expression.

How has your approach to lighting design evolved over time?

Jessica Greenberg: Over time, my view of lighting has expanded. Initially, it was about supporting theater productions, but I've since explored light art, exterior architectural lighting, and projection art, especially during COVID-19 when theaters were closed. This period pushed me to think creatively and use light in various forms, from outdoor installations to interactive sculptures.

What are your impressions of Croatia, and how does it compare to your life in Utah?

Jessica Greenberg: Although I've only been here for two days, the hospitality and generosity I've experienced are remarkable. The attention to detail and quality, along with a joyful approach to work, stand out to me. The landscape is breathtaking, with beautiful greenery, mountains, and the sea. The rich history and culture here are also fascinating, offering a contrast to the relatively young history of the United States.

What are your professional goals for the next couple of years?

Jessica Greenberg: As the Chair of the Performing Arts Department, I am growing as an administrator and leader while continuing my work in lighting design. I aim to expand my network and explore experimental light art, particularly environmental projects. One upcoming project focuses on the Great Salt Lake in Utah, which is facing challenges due to climate change. I hope to use my art to draw attention to this issue and contribute to environmental awareness.
